Planning Your Pond

Tips on Selecting the Proper Site for Your Pond:

  • Your site should have a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of sunlight.
  • Your site needs electrical power.

  • Your pond should be enjoyed from a deck or patio, or easily viewed from the inside of your home.
  • Do not locate under trees.
  • Locate marshy zone on the far side of the pond so as to not impede view (marshy zones contain marsh plants: iris, cattails, reeds, etc.)
  • Always dig in an area of unearthed soil so sides do not cave in while digging.
  • Do not locate pond in low area of yard otherwise runoff will end up in pond. Runoff may contain fertilizers or pesticides.
  • Lay out a garden hose the size and shape you desire and live with this a few days.
  • Must be safe for small children with a gradual incline into pond.
  • Depth requirements according to your municipality, usually 2' to 3' deep. Please call for town specifications so you do not need a fence.

Zones:
  • Marshy zone to approximately 1'
  • Medium water zone 13: 2' - 4'
  • Deep Water Zone: 2' - 3'
